Copper is necessary to all facets of daily life and an important part of Arizona’s economy. It’s also one of 60 critical minerals essential to U.S. economic, energy and national security applications, but it has vulnerable supply chains. Arizona State University is partnering with Phoenix-based metals company Freeport-McMoRan to develop advanced technologies involving artificial intelligence and robotics to make domestic copper mining more efficient and to prepare the workforce for this important industry.
