A construction engineering degree focuses on planning, design, and management for the construction of facilities such as highways, bridges, airports, railroads, industrial plants, buildings, dams, and reservoirs. One of about fifteen programs nationwide, ASU’s construction engineering curriculum combines the design principles of civil engineering with the business knowledge of construction management. It includes engineering design and construction management courses with a focus on sustainability and building information modeling topics. Construction management content includes, but is not limited to, project estimating, cost and schedule control, construction methods, people management and contract management. The curriculum’s design content includes structures, geotechnical engineering and transportation. Students are further prepared with the computer, management, technical and people skills needed to succeed.

Construction engineers typically engage in the design of temporary structures, cost estimating, planning and scheduling, materials procurement, selection of equipment, and cost control. They also serve as a key interface between the design activities and field construction.

We are educating engineers who can be licensed as professional engineers: problem solvers with technical capabilities.

Career paths

As a Construction Engineering graduate, you will be prepared to begin as a field engineer, project engineer, or project designer working for facility owners, design firms, construction companies, specialty subcontractors, or material suppliers. As your career progresses, you should be able to take on leadership roles in the delivery of sustainable facilities in the built environment and then progress through successively higher levels of management responsibility.
