More information about civil, environmental and sustainable engineering at ASU

Civil and environmental engineers work to achieve safe and sustainable development in a cost-effective, environmentally protective and socially responsible manner. They utilize engineering principles to enhance the built and natural environment and contribute to environmental protection and remediation, water conservation, environmental biotechnology, materials, and infrastructure development.

Our faculty are actively engaged in many local, national and international-level research efforts that have a great impact on economic development and environmental quality. These research efforts are concentrated in the area of sustainable urban engineering, with a particular emphasis on arid regions. The school of engineering provides a unique and supportive environment for interdisciplinary research and educational opportunities, and outstanding opportunities exist for students to develop strong, focused expertise in one of the available specialty areas as well as in relevant interdisciplinary studies, including sustainability and biotechnology.

Graduates of our programs have career opportunities that are plentiful and vary in the nature of different activities, tools, situations, clients, and venues. The completion of a civil engineering project involves solving technical problems while collaborating with professionals of many different disciplines and technical backgrounds. From conceptual design to a forensic study of failed performance, civil engineers need the mathematical, scientific and computational tools to solve problems associated with developing and sustaining a civilized community.
